Years 5 and 6 took the train and tube to Westminster at the end of last month. They had a tour of the House of Lords (they couldn’t go into the Commons due to Prime Minister’s Questions, though they did learn about the workings of Parliament through a ‘virtual’ Commons).

Afterwards they were invited into an opulent committee room with astonishing views over the river, where two MPs spoke about what their jobs entail: Andrew Lewer (who visited us a year ago) and Tom Pursglove (whose 30th birthday was on 5 November – the children gave him an early present and card!). They then watched a debate in the Public Gallery of the Commons. After leaving (and threading their way past a noisy demonstration on Parliament Square!) they walked up Whitehall to see the sights, and even climbed up Nelson’s Column (just the bit you’re allowed to…)!
